Named for a rare grasshopper Sigaus childi, found only at Central Otago within the Earnscleugh gold mine tailings, just across the road from Grasshopper Rock vineyard. The site is fortuitously harsh and sufficiently challenging to make the vines work their hardest. With extremes of heat and cold comes the risk of severe spring and autumn frosts, the property represents a demanding but rewarding environment for the production of world class Pinot Noir.

Goldwater were established 1978, they had the vision to sow one of New Zealand's very first vineyards on Waiheke Island in Hauraki Gulf. They now make their home amongst the coddled blocks of vine in Marlborough's Wairau Valley. To create a Chardonnay of superior palate weight, a number of Burgundian techniques are employed, a rich course of barrel ferments and eight months lees battonage in French oak. Its vibrant peach bouquet precedes a textural palate of toasty creamyness, the temperate tropicality of apricots and lime, impeccably balanced, silky and refined.

Central Otago is a winegrower's paradise and a Pinot Noir maker's dream, a topographical cornucoppia of microclimes and stupendous terroirs. Planted to rich glacial deposits along the Wanaka Cromwell Highway, under the lee of Sugarloaf near the hamlet of Pisa, the frugal harvest of TOSQ Vineyard is treated to traditional wild yeast open vinification. The active barrels set sail across the Tasman for completion of ferments at the Giant Steps wineworks in Yarra Valley. Central Otago as you like it, gummy, soily tannins, peppery black brambles, gelatinous opulence and palate weight throughout.

Rarely ever made in vineyards of the new world, Vin Gris is a Blanc de Noirs, rather common in many parts of Europe, where grapes of either colour can be mix and matched for a rainbow of wine styles. Felton Road treat their Pinot Noir to a whole bunch press and prompt draining of skins, infusing the juices with rakish coppery hues and just a soupçon of textural grape tannin. A prettily perfumed nose of strawberry and wild flower, Vin Gris palate is laden with fruits yet pleasingly dry, herbaceousness and apple, its long, tasty finish, seasoned by sprigs of fennel and bay.

PinotNoir / Central Otago / NewZealand
A characterful Pinot Noir born of triumph over adversity. Considerable research by Stewart Elms in 1991 identified the north facing slopes at the end of Felton Road near Bannockburn as being one of the warmest and most ideal sites in Central Otago. Heat summation data and soil maps from the construction of the Clyde Hydro Dam made a crucial contribution to the establishment of vines on Felton Road. Mouthcoating, subtle and caressing of fruit, a Pinot Noir of harmony, restraint and sophistication that intrigues rather than shouts its breeding, finishing with just enough tannin to frame the wine beautifully.

A number of sites along Felton Road were meticulously surveyed before any vines went in the ground, favourable soils were identified as free draining and low fertility, influenced by the Central Otago growing season to yield an extraordinary quality of Pinot Noir. The non interventionalist approach means a traditional fermentation and moderately long maceration on skins to extract rich colours and tannin with considerable depth of flavour. Aged for a year in a selection of the finest French barriques, its dusty floral nose, violets and rose, integrate seamlessly with the oak perfumes of cinnamon and clove.

Central Otago is the most southerly wine region in the world, at the edge of sustainable viticulture. Hot days, cool nights and long dry autumns are perfect. Clones on a variety of low vigor rootstocks were planted to free draining, low fertility soils during the 1990s. Felton Road's unique gravity flow techniques permit juices to peacefully ferment and tranquilly age in oak, sparing the wine any trauma as it gently evolves. The ultimate integrity of texture encourages the palate to open softly, blooming with dainty florals and ripe fresh stonefruit over a pleasing seam of juicy minerality.

The illustrious Mendoza clone Chardonnay was planted 1992 to a gentle east facing slope right next to Block 3. Grapes are whole bunch pressed and gravity fed to seasoned French oak for a wild indigenous yeast vinification. Ferments remain in barrel for a long and languid sixteen months maturation. A multi dimensional Chardonnay in the well established, mouth filling style of Central Otago. The palate is where it all becomes more serious with an array grilled nut and baked goody flavours, the deep schist soils of Block 2 are conspicuous and up front in the lengthy mineral finish.

Dawn and Neil McCallum had been looking for a quality site since 1979, it became clear that Martinborough was the place. Beginning in 1986, the wines of Martinborough were given a seal of origin. Authentification is administered through Martinborough Terrace Appellation of Origin System. A mere 600 plantable hectares in size, the special soils are comprised almost completely of free draining gravels with the same meagre rainfall, aspects and temperatures, unique and homogenous from a viticultural point of view.
